Doctors have the biggest responsibility among many professionals. This is because they handle life. Being a doctor is, therefore, not easy. And being a med student is not easy as well. You have to undergo rigid training for a long time before you can be considered a doctor. Aside from this, you also have to pass the licensure exam and take on an internship or residency. So how long does it take for one to finish med school? Read on and find out.

Pre-Med

Before you can study medicine, you have to take pre-med courses first. A pre-med degree usually takes 4 years. If you did not take a pre-med program in your college, but you want to proceed to go to med school, you need to take up the core pre-med courses required by the med school. This may take more or less a year, depending on your performance.

Medical School

Medical school itself will take you around four years to finish. However, if you have some subjects you need to complete, youll have to spend your summer or another semester finishing them up. Some med students actually spend 4 1/2 to 5 years in medical school.

Seminars and Internship

After finishing med school, you cannot be considered a doctor yet. You still have to attend seminars, internship, and programs for your specialization. This may take you 2 to 3 years more.

One can actually finish the study of medicine in about 12 to 13 years. For some doctors, however, medical school is not yet done even after they have taken the board exam. For some medical professionals, the study of medicine continues long after you have become a licensed doctor. This is because of the fact that as technology develops, doctors should continue to study the breakthroughs in medicine in order to hone their skills and keep at pace with the changes in the medical field.
