many local dive shops give SCUBA lessons, take an introductory course and then figure out what you want to do from there. Personally, i like wreck diving and salvage diving. There are so many different diving disciplines you could master.

Freestyle Swim: Diving
How you start swimming during a race can play a significant role in how the rest of the race goes. A common mistake for many swimmers is diving to deep. This can be a problem because the other swimmers may only be going a foot or two under the water while you are going four or five feet down. It will take you more time to get back to the surface and slow you down. When diving in, you really want to aim for diving a foot or two beneath the water. When you step onto the “starting block” there are generally two positions you can take. In the first one you place your feet towards the front of the block and have your toes curled over the edge. Your head should be looking down at your toes while you are crouched over with your fingers grabbing the block. Lean back so that when the whistle blows or the buzzer goes off you can sling yourself forward off of the block. Another starting position is where you move one foot backwards in a “track start” stance. Everything else remains the same in this position, with your hands curled over the edge and your weight shifted to your back foot. Some racers prefer this stance to get a better launch off of the block. Focus on getting a nice streamline off of the block. Your body will follow where your hands go, so make sure they are pointed off the block a few feet in front of you. Again remember to only go about 1-2 feet under the water. Once in the water, kick for a few yards, come to the surface, and get going!

In the summer of 2003 I was a NASA co-op at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. I was working at the Neutral Buoyancy Lab, which is a giant pool 200 ft x 100 ft x 40 ft, used for astronaut EVA (extravehicular activity, or spacewalk) training. In addition to planning and organizing pool configurations for upcoming training events, I got to also dive as an underwater camera operator during the simulations.
