Atlantica Online: The New Gaming Addiction

This article is just to educate you about some of the fantastic new features contained in the new MMORPG Atlantica ONLINE. Open Beta was at the 24th of September 2008.

Setting:

When you first enter Atlantica, you are in what is called the “dream world”. This is also effectively the tutorial stage. The three angels there introduce you to your surroundings, and tell you of your mission and teleport you to the “real world” after you have completed all their tasks and listened to all their waffle! Your mission in this game , is to find the lost city of Atlantis – as the game’s name itself suggests. Your character/s traipse around a graphic rich environment , which displays many historical sites and places. You can travel to Beijing, Calcutta, visit the Pyramids or even associate with Vikings!

Mercenaries:

When you first begin, you create a single character and name it. You can select its appearance, and choose a weapon for it. There are 7 to choose from: Sword, Spear, Axe, Gun, Bow, Cannon and Staff. When you enter the game, you also have the option to add to your “party”. You can choose other characters, or “mercenaries” to fight with you. Only basic ones are available to start with. You control these in battle as your own, and your possible party size grows when you level up. The maximum party size you can possibly have, is 9.

There are a range of unique mercenaries also, that you can add to your party by doing quests at certain levels. The first unique available, is the Monk at lvl 18. You can obtain many others, such as Witches, Princesses, Vikings, Inventors, Beast Trainers, Oracles, Lady Knights and Exorcists. Mercenaries can be fired from your team, or upgraded with certain items. There are two classes of mercenary, C and D. (Or if you will, Advanced and Basic).

Each mercenary has one or more special skills that will make your fights more interesting. Gunners have Wild Shot, which will fire high powered bullets at your foe. Shamans have a heal skill, Blessing of Life, and a curse skill, Hex of Darkness.

Your mercenaries also level up, and the max level for each of them is 100.

Basics:

As with any MMO, players can belong to guilds. Unique in Atlantica is the option for guilds to control certain cities. There is a complex economic and government system built in also. You can party with people in dungeons and to help with the wide range of quests available. A player can also invest in advancing a wide range of skills, and once an Artisan of a particular craft , can teach this skill to others. Beginner characters can also be mentored by older characters. The apprentice can gain extra exp and the mentor character will receive 200k when their Apprentice reaches lvl 30.

There are a wide range of scroll items that have different effects, such as the ability to look at other player’s teams, expand your inventory
, or summon a vortex of wind in battle.

If you wish to rename a mercenary, players can purchase an item called a Blue Quill and rename their entire team. (Normally only your first character would have a name, and the other members of your party would simply be called ‘Archer’ or ‘Spearman’. My Opinion:

Obviously, I think this game has a lot of promise, and you don’t see many turn based MMOs around; at least to the standard Atlantica is. One of my favourite features is the Auto-Move, and it automatically moves your character to the location it needs to be for a certain quest. One click and you find yourself running to a mob location, boss room or the NPC you need to talk to. I also love the historical environment in which you find yourself in – with many different countries and continents to explore; how COULD you get bored?

One of the things I find increasingly irritating however, is the way the NPCs talk whenever you open up a chat window again. (I think its just the voice actors!)

?As the sun shines today, so will the sun shine in your lives!? That was the sincere prayer and wishes from the visibly excited Professor Octave Cossi Houdegbe, the Chancellor and President of Houdegbe North American University, Cotonou, in the Republic of Benin, to his graduating students.

It was truly a sunny day last Saturday after a torrential downpour which lasted till Friday evening. People were apprehensive and actually thought the rains will make Saturday?s convocation impossible. In spite of the rains, all hands were on deck, as workers and vehicles hurried round to sand-fill the flooded campus including the only road leading to the University which was partially submerged in floods.

One can then appreciate the joJy of the President who saw the sunshine on the day of the convocation as a special day of blessings for the departing graduants. True to its mission of building bridges across political, linguistic and cultural divides the convocation ceremonies on Saturday the 16th of July 2011 opened with first, the national anthem of the United States of America, that of Nigeria and then finally, the Republic of Benin national anthem. This is symbolic as the admission of students into the university is opened to all nationalities without discrimination. In majority, are students from Nigeria who run in thousands in a school where the student-population stands at over Six thousand

A university like Houdegbe North American University Cotonou is, at this time relevant as a uniting factor for economic co-operation and growth, not only in the West African sub-region, but also in the entire African continent. The successful unification of the African region is hinged on the exchange of socio-economic, cultural and educational actions. These are the aspirations of the first fully bilingual University in West Africa, the Houdegbe North American University, Cotonou. Apart from the pursuance of knowledge and making the university a centre of academic excellence, the Houdegbe North America University also recognizes and awards HONORIS CAUSA to honor men and women who have made indelible marks in the socio-economic, political and cultural development cutting across all countries, especially the West African sub-region and the African continent.

This is the state of affairs, and it was all joyful celebrations on that bright sunshine Saturday the 16th of July when the University graduated students from the School of Business Administration, Departments of Economics, Computer and Mathematics, Schools of International Relations and political Science. Others are the faculty of Law, the faculty of Languages and the Institute of Translators, the School of Medicine and the School of Pharmacy and Allied Medical profession.

In a well articulated and moving speech delivered by the Chancellor-President of the University, Professor Ocatve Houdegbe, who spoke both in the French and the English languages, urged all none-French- speaking students to be masters of the French language for the four years they will be stayingin the university. To achieve this end, he charged all the French lecturers of the university to do all things possible in order that the feat would be achieved, if the university has to assume its proper position as the only bilingual university in the West African sub-region. The colourful occasion which took place in a partially open space, witness thousands of guests from all over the World, especially the West African sub-region, spilling over to the extra-large canopies set besides the main open venue.

The most touching aspect of his speech was when the Chancellor urged the students to be virtuous, fusing moral disciple with intellectuality. Like Socrates and Plato had taught their students, wisdom and intellectuality alone cannot make a man without virtue and moral discipline. To them, the man with wisdom (the philosopher) and virtue should rule without being corrupt.

Moral discipline means so much to Houdegbe North American University as about sixteen students suspected to be cultists and other students caught in various criminal activities including rape, were rusticated recently from the University. The graduating students, according to the Chancellor, are going into the world, and in doing so, they have to be men and women of great integrity and virtue, urging them to uphold the good name of the University. He revealed that the University has working relationships with other Universities in he USA and Europe, especially Hampshire University where students from Houdegbe North American University can continue with higher degrees, if they so wish. This was received amidst great cheers and ovation by the graduating students who were all decked with multicolor various academic gowns. So were their lecturers and other officials dressed.

True to the African way of life, the celebrations were unlimited. Parents, friends, and well-wishers have come from far and near to watch their children graduating, which to many people, is a remarkable achievement in their children?s lives. The parents and friends in their twenties and fifties were seen under various trees and corners with coolers of food and drinks in great feast, eating, drinking and merrying. The fact that their children are graduating after four years of great toiling, building up academic laurels is enough to celebrate.

Traditional music and trumpets rented the air while in various groups; dancers were in a world of their own. They are the graduates on who perpetual light of God will shine all through their lives.

When it comes to turning out science, engineering, and technology grads, American colleges are getting left in the dust?a mere 5 percent, compared to 66 percent in Japan and 59 percent in China. To help counter that trend, the National 4-H Council has established a bold goal of engaging one million young members in science programs by 2013. Indiana 4-H Foundation executive director Shelly Bingle-Coffman wants to see some of those in Indiana.

?We want to develop 4-H science clubs, starting with two in northern and northeast Indiana, with the overall goal of getting kids interested in science. And we hope that some of them eventually pick science as a career,? she said. ?4-H is really good at helping kids figure out what they like and where they excel. Both directly and indirectly, we do a lot of career development.?

To help these 4-H science clubs get off the ground, Pam Ott of Farm Credit Services recently presented a check for $ 6,000 to Bingle-Coffman on behalf of the Columbia City, LaGrange, South Bend and Rochester Offices. ?Farm Credit has been an absolutely amazing partner with 4-H over the years, and this is just the latest example,? said Bingle-Coffman. ?We?re truly grateful for their support.?

Bingle-Coffman explained that the types of science programs vary from region to region, with some being set up as after-school clubs, while others may take the form of a weekend workshops or week-long summer camp. The local Purdue extension educators who work with volunteers to plan and implement the programs have considerable discretion in developing them in ways that will get kids in their area involved.

?We?re trying to be very grassroots about how we develop the programs, so they can be adapted to make them the most effective,? she said. ?The key is to find ways to get kids engaged and get them excited.?

Once the clubs have been designed and are in place, Bingle-Coffman said that they will build on ways that 4-H is already involved with science. Some of those ways ? like food and crop production?involve 4-H?s traditional tie to agriculture, but will just be more intentional in nature. Related topics include natural resources and water quality, with entire curriculums written for these and other topic areas. She said that young people were particularly excited about robotics and that building wind turbines has also been a popular activity. Bingle-Coffman stated that the science clubs would take on something of a ?non-traditional? 4-H flavor.

?A lot of families have the misconception that 4-H is just for rural kids, and that you have to come from a farm or have livestock,? she said. ?Like all of 4-H, these clubs will be open to anyone. We want kids and parents to realize that there are are a variety of activities and many different ways for youth to be involved in 4-H.?

She added that the activities performed by the kids in the clubs or camps might not necessarily take the form of a 4-H exhibit that is shown at the fair. Instead, it might involve being part of a robotics contest or science fair.

Bingle-Coffman indicated that the main objectives of the clubs are for the kids to have fun while learning the basics and becoming more inquisitive. For those who find their niche in science, the opportunities of a career could be attractive.

?I hear from ag-related companies all the time how they?re having difficulty filling scientific jobs from within the U.S.,? she said. For her part, Farm Credit?s Ott said that it was a good feeling to be able to help the science clubs get started.

?So many of our customers and families are involved with 4-H that we already know what a quality program it is,? she said. ?This was a little different emphasis, but seemed like a really good way to invest in our communities and our future.?
