Going to college has more costs associated with it than simply class tuition. Students must pay for room and board, transportation, books, class materials, living expenses and even entertainment. While undertaking college classes may cost more money than most students can afford, the promise of higher paying jobs makes college more attractive. There are a variety of ways that students can rearrange their lifestyles or plan ahead so that, when the time comes, they can afford extra college living expenses.

College Savings Plans

Students can ask parents, friends and family members to assist with college expenses by participating in a college savings plan. Some merchants sponsor programs where students receive online discounts and specialty target coupons to save money. Another option is to make purchases through these merchants and receive a percentage of money back in a special college savings account which can be used for school expenses. Friends and family can make purchases that contribute to these accounts, as well.

Transportation

Co-eds living on small campuses need to worry little about getting to and from class. Those on larger campuses without the comforts of dorm living may be able to use a university shuttle bus system. Another popular option among those attending classes is the bicycle. It not only helps them to stay in shape, but it is faster than walking and can minimize the amount of time it takes to get from off-campus housing to class. Those with the most worry of college expenses are the students with cars. Universities charge large fees for parking passes, and often make it challenging for those who do not purchase on-campus parking permit packages. These individuals also must pay for fuel, insurance, vehicle registration, maintenance and inspection.

Computer Systems and Entertainment

For some students, computer systems are not only important for their college majors and excelling in class, they are also the gateway to a social life. Computers can be used for class work with everything from homework assignments to taking notes in class to writing term papers. When the student is online, they are also helpful for research and picking up or turning in class assignments. When the work is done, however, students can also use computers for entertainment. Whether it’s playing online games, renting movies, posting updates to social media websites or finding online coupons to go shopping, computers can be a convenient form of entertainment that is already paid for by school expenses.

Only As Good As

Only As Good As Your Word: Writing Lessons from My Favorite Literary Gurus

In this funny, moving, and revealing ride, Susan Shapiro recounts her obsessive quest for success as a professional writer and the beloved mentors who saved her life — and career — along the way.Growing up in the Midwest, Susan Shapiro knew at a young age that all she wanted in life was to become a writer. And so, as soon as she graduated from college, she headed straight to New York City, determined to break into the biz. A few hard knocks later, she learned that it takes more than being a good writer to make a living at it — the most successful professional writers, she discovered, have great mentors to support, promote, advise, admonish, inform, infuriate, and sometimes give them a good kick in the pants along the way.Only As Good As Your Word is a rollicking chronicle of Shapiro’s coming of age as a journalist and author. It’s also a revealing memoir that proves what Shapiro’s been saying all along: The most important lessons about writing really are, at heart, important lessons about life.A must-read for all writers in the publishing trenches, from the very green to the veterans.
